The Many Benefits of Hunting Essay - 2174 Words

When a Minnesota dentist killed a prized African lion named Cecil he received an onslaught of criticism and reignited the debate concerning hunting. To many people, hunting is a cruel and inhuman act. For others, hunting is a sport and a way of life. Is hunting ethical? Should hunting be allowed to continue? First off, what is hunting? According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, hunting is a â€Å"sport that involves the seeking, pursuing, and killing of wild animals and birds, called game and game birds, primarily in modern times with firearms but also with bow and arrow† (â€Å"hunting†). It is my firm belief that most hunting should most definitely be allowed to continue and they should also be supported. My first reason for being†¦show more content†¦Today, everything is manufactured, processed, and shipped out to be bought by the consumer. Part of this lifestyle is the grocery store. The groceries that can be purchased include a wide variety of products ranging from apples to zucchini. In every grocery store there is a frozen section, and part of that section is meat. The life of this meat includes being subjugated to a variety of hormones and chemicals meant to enhance the size and productivity of the animals bred for slaughter. According to Michael Pollan of the New York Times Magazine, â€Å"one of the real problems is that the animals have spent their [lives] lying in their manure, are smeared and caked with the stuff, and theyre entering the food plant so many steps are taken to make sure that the manure doesnt infect the meat, which can happen very easily† (Pollan). Another problem with store-bought meat is the fact that supplemented with a byproduct comm only known as pink slime. So what is pink slime? According to CBS news, â€Å"Its actually lean finely textured beef, a low-cost ingredient in ground beef made from fatty left-over meat trimmings from other cuts. The bits are heated to about 100 F and spun to remove most of the fat, then compressed into blocks for use in ground meat.
